Scott in Florida - 24 weeks
« on: February 16, 2011, 09:06:13 AM »
Well, I thought this was the week I would hit 50 pounds lost, but it was not to be.  We had a special surprise birthday dinner for my daughter that was put on by a friend of the family.  It was definitely not sugar free or low carb, and it was not one of those things where I could say, "Sorry, I don't eat those things..."  So there was potatoes and other things that I would not otherwise eat, and then there was that cheesecake with caramel and walnut sauce...

I actually thought I would be up in weight this week, because that was the case for several days.  I would have been happy just to hold even.  But the scale said I was actually down 1 pound, so I was happy to see that.  One single meal doesn't cause a total crash and burn!  And the 50 Pound Club will be there for next week!

And I am running 3 mornings a week now, still easing into it slowly.  It's great because that gives me more motivation to get my weight where it should be, because I know it will make running even more enjoyable.

So all in all a pretty good week.  Hope you guys have one too!

That's exciting Umpa!  How long before you can start running?

Noooooo!

Running good...sneakers bad....

The whole key to my being able to run again is that I have been running barefoot for the past several weeks.  Are you up for it?  It's much easier than most people imagine.

Monkeyboy! Are you really? I caught that in the book, and thought I could run barefoot at the beach! How are your arches and knees holding up?My running shoes have a really thin sole soI can feel the impact. They are wicked cheap. :D

Umpa it's funny that you mention Chia Seeds.  I just started using them this morning.  I recently heard about all of the health benefits and bought some ChiaNutra at Costco yesterday (0 net carbs per tblsp).  This morning I sprinkled some in the egg mixture for my omelet.  It gave the egg some extra crunch and was quite good.  It is my understanding that you can soak it in water and make a gel and add it to almost anything or just sprinkle it the way it is.  It's not like flax seeds that it has to me ground up to digest.  All of the websites I have gone to just rave about all of the nutrients in these little seeds, so I'm going to give them a try.  I'll let you know if I start growing green sprouts out of my pores...CH CH CH Chia!

Oh Umpa...we need to talk...  ;)

When I got to the part in the book where he was talking about how barefoot is really the best way to run, I had a "Eureka" moment, thinking, "Is that really what will let me start running again?"  I mean, I have been wearing shoes my whole life - especially when I used to run.  I didn't even go barefoot as a child.

But I was open to the idea.  And I tried it.  And it works!  You will want to go into it very slowly, and don't think you can go out and run a mile right off the bat (even if you can with shoes).  There are some great resources on the web.  I check in often at http://www.reddit.com/r/BarefootRunning/ - there are some good links on the right side for information on getting started.

Based on advice from experienced people, I wanted to be able to run a mile at least twice a week barefoot before I went into any kind of minimalist shoes.  I reached that goal and last Saturday purchased a pair of Vibram Five Fingers minimalist shoes.  I ran in them for the first time yesterday morning, and I LOVE them.  When you are running barefoot, your foot fall is completely different (no heel strike, where all the damage and injuries take place).

I could go on and on but you get the point.  Looking forward to hearing about your progress!  AND...I want to hear if you try any recipes using the food of the Tarahumara (pinole) - I really want to try that but have no idea how to prepare it (I don't cook)

Shihtzmom I soak 4  tablespoons of chia seeds in a 16 oz mason jar overnight. For me its for the omegas and to stay hydrated.I actually like the taste raw and can see using them in breads ,pancakes  and muffins.
Scott
I am the oposite.Hate shoes hate to wear them.Fought with my mother as a child.Take them off as soon as I sit down.Have always played sports and with traditional tennis shoes and riding motorcycles the injuries came.Sonn as i can run again I am gonna try the bare foot thing.Let me know how you like the 5 fingers.
I found it interesting that instead of carbs they suggest fat and protien for long distance. There are recipes on the web for pinole.I will work on it and post successful recipes.I like power foods. :)

I absolutely LOVE my Vibram FiveFingers.  It definitely helps to run barefoot for a little while and get used to the feeling of running without all the artificial cushioning of running shoes.

They do look a little funny, and you will get comments.  I don't mind that.  Last night my daughter and I went to a Tampa Bay - Detroit hockey game, and standing in line to get a sausage there was an older couple behind me, and she asked, "Now what are those things you're wearing?"  I see it as a great opportunity to tell people about the "right" way to run :)

Can't wait to see your recipes!

Umpa the chia seeds are also good sprinkled on your salad.  Gives it a little extra crunch and flavour.
