new at this
« on: March 29, 2011, 09:27:44 PM »
I need to lose 50lbs. I am 5"9 I am 74 years young.  Love life, very active.
I just  completed reading your book.  It was recommended by Scott Johnson.  This is my last chance.  I have tried it all.  I am confused. Not much is mentioned about milk products.  What about veggie burgers?  I have given up sugar before but felt deprived. I was addicted to whole grain breads and sweets.
I find you web site very confusing (very busy).  I live in a retirement community.  We get one meal a day. I will sit down with the chef and explain my plan.  Tonight : Beet salad or tomato basil rice soup. followed by pork tenderloin.  french fries or baked potato whole green beans.
I stayed in my apartment and made an eggbeater omelet with green and red pepper.

Welcome to the family, Eileen! :) :) :) :) :) :)

As many others here, this was my last chance too.
Fortunately, we both found it before dire health consequences came into our lives.

You asked about veggie burgers...
The cardinal rule of FTS is to always carefully read nutrition labels.

And always eat no more than 20 net carbs per day.
Be mindful of your portion sizes.
Don't overdo it with any foods (i.e. fats, sodium, etc.).
Enjoy SF sweets only occasionally.
Drink LOTS of plain water... At least 64 oz. per day!
And finally, get some exercise for health (not weight loss). Even if it's only taking walks.
What you do today is what matters!

Welcome Eileen,
It can seem a little overwhelming at first, but really it's not!  Read the book, then read it again.  As Tony said, it's all about reading labels and portion control.  I am only in my second week so we are in this together!  Keep your carbs under 20gms and make some simple substitutions and you will be just fine.
I am a HUGE sugar freak and chocoholic and after the first week of sugar detox I am feeling really good.  The recipes on the message board here may just be life savers!  It is important to see how things affect you, I had a mild headache for the first 5-6 days from detox and I have discovered that xylitol sweetener causes stomach upset for me.  Drink LOTS of water to help with the headaches, and keep doing that after detox too.
Just ask any questions here, everyone is super helpful and completely supportive!  Enjoy your new life!

Hi there Eileen and welcome to our FTS family! ;)

Remember to use your book (pg 106-107) as a reference guide so you will know which vegetables are best to eat and what their carb counts are.  Counts are for 1/2 cup servings unless otherwise noted.

As for  milk products make sure you get  the unsweetened Almond Milk.  Most cheeses are okay just make sure to check the carb count on the pkg and the serving size.  I have found some cheddar cheese with 0 carbs.  Beware of cottage cheese it tends to be 5 carbs for 1/2 cup serving.

I hope you have found this information helpful.

We are all here to help you be successful! :D

I have spent a long time trying to install progress bar.  I give up.  Thanks for all the advice and help.

That's OK Eileen, you don't need a fancy progress bar, all you need to do is get serious about losing that 50 pounds  ;)

Welcome Eileen.  I can tell you that the F2S cookbook is my lifesaver.. I am able to make meals without the stress of figuring out what to cook.. Umpa (Doug's wife) and Doug really are great and will convert any recipe you may bring to them.. Dont overwhelm yourself.. Take one step at a time. Some adapt quicker than others, but overall, if you stick to it, it really works..

Wishing you the best in your journey...
