Question for Doug re: Saskatoons
« on: May 31, 2011, 03:21:08 PM »
Or Tony or anyone else who might know about these berries. We call them Serviceberries in Montana, but I believe in Canada they're called Saskatoons and back east called Juneberries. They grow wild in my yard and it looks like this year we're going to get a great crop. I looked them up and only found their nutritional information listed for 3/4 cup. So, if I divide that by 3 for a 1/4 cup, does the following information look correct to you? About 4 carbs per 1/4 cup?

Nutrition Facts --

Serviceberries/Juneberries/Saskatoons (3/4 c. = 100 g)

Hi Rena! :)

I've never seen these berries around here.
But I found this online at MyFitnessPal.com whose carb counts seem to agree with what you found.

Thanks, Tony! That helps a lot.

Serviceberries are often mistaken for huckleberries. They look a lot alike, but are not nearly as good as hucks. I don't even want to know what the carb count is for huckleberries. They're so good and pretty much what Montana is famous for.

Hi Rena! :)

I checked huckleberries at this site:
http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/ethnic-foods/8104/2

and the FDA's:
http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

They are about 2 net grams per ounce.
Or 4 net grams per 1/4 cup.

So I think you could go ahead and enjoy huckleberries just like serviceberries. :)

Oh cool -- thanks so much for looking them up!

Huckleberries are huge here. We have everything huckleberry. They are SO good. No wonder they're the favorite food of bears. You're in the NW, so are they big there too?

4 carbs per 1/4 -- I can handle that! :D :D :D

I might have to make some berry cobblers this summer. Our serviceberries show up mid-to-end of June, but the hucks don't come out until late August. Those are harder to pick here because where they grow is usually very heavy bear populated. But the SMELL when you're picking hucks -- OMG! Mmmm!

BTW -- I'm only 2 pounds away from where I was before. Getting there!  :)

Umpa -- I don't see a berry cobbler in the bakery book. Are you working on one? The tarts would work well for both huckleberries and serviceberries, so maybe I'll give those a try if I have a lot of berries. Serviceberries aren't nearly as good as hucks, so I usually use them in baking or smoothies, but they might work well in a tart.

Hi Rena! :)

Ripe blackberries are EVERYWHERE around here in late August and through September.
Virtually, every rural road around here get lined with them.
You could go out and fill a 5 gallon bucket with them in a couple of hours!

We also have them on our property.
They are considered a "weed" in this area because there are so many of them and they grow so fast.
Plus, next to cactus, they must be the prickliest plants alive with big gnarly thorns!

And, they're VERY tough to kill!
If you don't kill the ENTIRE plant, they will come back 2-3 times larger in just a few weeks! :o
If I did not like to eat the berries so much, they would drive me crazy! :P

We also have hucks around about that time. But there are no where near as many!
I love hucks too!!! :) :) :)
What you do today is what matters!

Rena I have made this one that Owensmath posted http://www.fattoskinny.net/index.php?topic=417.0  other had comments and suggestions.  I only used 1/2 cup of heavy cream and poured a little of the xylitol on berry's.  Very good!

Thanks, Amber! I'll check it out.

Of course, the berries aren't here yet -- just fluffy white bloosoms, but soon ... :D

Do black bears frequent the areas you pick at? We have both grizzlies and black berries here and most of the huckleberries are in their territories. The serviceberries are all over, including my yard. But then again, I get bears in my yard too, so that doesn't say much.

I also have bears on my property. One was killed here last year that was aggressive. Here in North Carolina they don't want anything to do with you and will walk away, unless there are babies. They climb trees here so I always tell visitors when looking for bears look up.Grizzlies are suppose to be extremely aggressive, but I have never had any personal experience with them so I don't know. They are really beautiful though!Doug and I were riding our dirtbikes through the woods  and i was in front of him,and i saw something in front of me and thought it was a dog,but it had rounded ears??It was a baby bear! I was so excited!i stopped my bike and screamed for doug cause i wanted him to see it! He rode up ,saw the baby bear and said lets go now!! I said no look how cute I want a picture! He said No, where there is a baby there is a mamma!!I was so excited that didn't even register! :D :D :D :D
