Mixed feelings ...

Now I don't think schools should go strictly low-carb like we eat here on FTS, but I think they're choices are still poor. If a child has a weight problem, I honestly believe it's up to the parents to help them. Schools have a responsibility to offer healthy food choices -- I agree on that. However, the reason I have mixed feelings is that I think they should be focusing more on PHYSICAL EDUCATION than worrying if they have peas one day and beans the next. Get the kids out of their seats and get them MOVING around. Sadly, so many schools have had to cut back on this sort of thing.

I don't know about you, but if *I* were a kid and had to eat peas, beans, and green vegetables at school ... I am sure I couldn't wait to get home to eat something that tasted GOOD! So really, what's the point here? Get them moving to burn that energy ...

I agree, Rena! :)

The developing bodies of children NEED physical activity.
If it's removed from their daily lives, they will get FAT!
What you do today is what matters!

I agree with you 1000% Rena.We have 10 year olds here at the cherokee indian reservation that are over 300 pounds.Kids don't move. When I was a kid we ran outside all day just came home to eat and then back out again to ride bikes play sports or go swimming.Mom had to drag us in for supper bath and bed.Kids sit in front of the tv or computer and the childhood obesity rate is an example of that.

Agreed! My son isn't on the FTS plan 100% He eats whatever the school feeds him, and I make sure to regulate STRICTLY the time he gets in front of the television.

He usually goes to his grandparents house for the summer, and the past few years has come back 20-25 pounds heavier! in THREE months! Scary for a mom to see this!

He didn't go last summer, and we were on the go go go. He didn't lose any weight...but imagine how fast kids grow...he is in the same size pants he wore last year...only they are not so long...if you get my meaning ;)

I have slowly introduced some of the FTS recipes, and he absolutley LOVES the french toast pancakes, and he is looking good. XD

Get those kids moving!!!

My children's school has implemented a "Walking Club" in the morning before school starts.  It's not much .....but it's a step in the right direction.

That's awesome. I know where I live, sports are huge in our schools (we homeschool, so we're not part of the system), but it's VERY hard to get in on the teams because it's such a big deal here. I was like Umpa and was outside all day as a kid. That's not possible where we live now because sometimes it's just too cold. I do make a habit of my boys doing PE, even inside. And the benefit of me doing FTS is that they now read labels to see what the carb counts are. They eat some things I eat, but for the most part, I let them eat what they like. I never had a weight issue until after my pregnancies.

You are so right Rena.  Their should be healthier choices but PE needs to be included as well and ultimately, it should be the parent who should be 100% involved..

fredfred that is so cool! I am all for letting them make their own choices Rena as long  as they understand what they are putting in their mouths ;) I can't tell you how many books  doug has given to kids and how well they do once they learn. He had one kid that contacted him for info and doug mailed him a book.He had this long black leather goth type jacket that he loved but couldn't zip up.My memory is he had about 50 pounds to lose.He sent doug a video of himself in the jacket running the zipper up and down,up and down !He got it closed and was so proud of himself. Kids are so smart and even if they are not overweight my vote is to teach them now so they don't become overweight. My prayer for my kids everynight is to keep them happy ,healthy and safe.

Weight problems have never been an issue with my kids. They're all skinny as bean poles -- however skinny those are. But my girls eat healthier now and my boys have started reading labels, so I see that as a good thing. Plus, we're not in the school system, so we don't have to deal with this issue at all. My daughter is in college, but she's 19 and is capable of picking good food over bad food.
