What is the best Healthwise bread/bagel?
« on: January 21, 2012, 03:23:33 PM »
Hello everyone!

I'm still a newbie, so here is a "rookie" question...  ;D

I found the Healthwise brand of zero carb breads online and am thinking about buying them.  Anyone know which one is the best to start with?  Or are these too good to be true???

Thanks!

I love the Josephs Pita's and lavish bread. Really versatile and HUGE so you really only need half of one.

Uh oh!  I think I might be reading my labels incorrectly then...or the website is lying.  The fiber is equal to the carbohydrates for a net of zero.  Eek..now I'm scared.  What am I missing?

Here is the the website...

Lets discuss the label then RUN don't walk away from these products. The manufacturer is fibbing. Here's my analysis of the labels ingredient list. By my count each whole bagel is at least 12 net carbs

1 oz of wheat bran is 18 grams carbs 12 grams fiber for a NET carb count of 6 being the first ingredient on the label this would supply the largest volume to the bagel. How much? According to the label a bagel weighs 2 ounces (serving size listed as 1/2 bagel 1 ounce) so I would say 1/2 of the ingredient would be wheat bran

1 oz of oat flour contains a total of 8 g of carbohydrates, and 1 g of dietary fiber, NET carbs 7 grams

Nope ;) The sad part is a diabetic would get a spike that they are not expecting.

Thank you so much for the info.  I am so glad I asked before I bought them!

This is probably why they are not available on netrition.com...they must know about these folks too.

Hi froglvr! :)

Sounds like you've just learned a very important thing about nutrition labels.
Unlike fat, sodium, etc., the FDA is NOT at all strict about how carbs are reported.

The FDA is fussy about the accuracy of ingredients listings.
Therefore, it's important to read the ingredients list after checking the carb counts.

My rule is... If any one of the first three ingredients listed is known to be high in carbs, I DO NOT buy the product!

Tony ;)
