Is FTS going to be the one?
« on: February 24, 2012, 04:45:14 PM »
Hello Everyone, I'm cyn- I have been struggling with my weight since I weighed my self at the age of 8 and saw that I was 80lbs!! It's been a battle ever since. You name it I've done it. I even had a lap band. that's OK for awhile then like everything else I find away to eat and gain. I saw FTS at Barnes and Noble in January. The one thing that grabbed my attention was the big writing!I love that. So easy to read. couldn't afford it at the time..It's been in my head for weeks. Today on a snow day my girls and I went to the bookstore and there it was. I didn't even think- just grabbed it and paid for it. Now I'm questioning myself as usual. Another way to eat? I'm excited though ..something inside me is telling me this time it's going to work..I hope. I see my horrible habits rubbing on to my girls. They learn bad habits from the one who buys the food. I'm all Italian and we comfort with food, ALWAYS. So here we go again. God be with me. I hope I change my ways.
thanks for listening :)
good luck to everyone
cyn-

Welcome Cyn!!  Welcome to the FTS forum family  ;)  You have for sure come to the right place.  There are so many wonderful caring people on the forum all cheering eachother on.  So please don't be a stranger.  We like to talk around here  ;D

Once you learn the ropes there are many wonderful recipes you can use to replace those comfort foods you love.  That is the biggest reason FTS works.  It is a lifestyle that you never have to go back to those "horrible habits".  (Really though it is the choices of foods more than the habits.)  You are going to do great!!

I know just how you feel, I was just like you. I had tried EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING. I just couldn't seem to lose the weight. So the Christmas before I started I was on a site called Jib Jab. I'm sure you're familiar with it? Anyway it's a site where you make these little videos by adding your face to their bodies. I did the little elf one and added my son and husband. I made it and then sat back and watched it, thinking it would be fun for the family for facebook. What happened really changed me. I saw myself in the little video in a skinny body, dancing around and being happy. Sounds silly but until that time my brain had told me that being skinny isn't possible. I guess for me that was my "ah ha" moment. I thought ya know I could do that, if I can look like that there...why can't I in real life? It stayed with me all through the holidays and I watched it a few more times. Took me three months but in March of 2010 I bought the FTS book and started down my new road. This June I will be maintaining for a year and it has been the easiest maintenance ever.  I have never been healthier, happier or had more energy.

Trust me if I can do this...so can you. Welcome to a COMPLETE CHANGE of your life.

Hi Cyn and welcome to the forum!  I am SOOO glad you bought the book!!  It is changing my life!  Just make up your mind to DO IT!  I have also been overweight my entire life and could never stay on any "diet" for long.  FTS is a lifestyle and not a diet.   I LOVE eating this way because I never have to feel deprived.  (I have a chocolate cheesecake in the oven cooling right now! :D)    The folks here will walk with you all the way to your goal.  They keep me inspired everyday!!
God bless you!!  YOU can do this!   ;D

MY goodness! I'm so excited! I finished the book this morning. I'm eating breakfast right now and enjoying it. I know what you mean about the little figure and your face placed in it? I play on pogo a game website and you have your pic and a cartoon body and it's funny, It really looks like me with the hair and dark eyes except for the nice body and I said the same to myself..I wish I looked like that! I do have a question. I've been going through my pantry and reading my labels..some of the carbs are much higher than the sugars? should I figure out how many teaspoons of sugars I'd be eating by dividing into the carbs or sugars? I hope I'm making myself clear.
example: peanut butter has 7 carbs but only 3 sugars per serving.
thanks for your help!

Cyn, the sugar listed on a label is already counted in the carbs, so ignore the sugar on the label. Take the carbs, subtract the fiber and any sugar alcohols (not the same as sugar) and that will give you the net carbs. If you want to see how many teaspoons of sugar that equals, divide the carbs by 4 and that's how many teaspoons of regular granulated sugar it would be.

There's so much talk about carbs turning into sugar, and then you read a label and it lists both carbs and sugar and it gets confusing at first. Then sometimes manufacturers throw in 'other carbohydrates' and it gets even more confusing. Just stick to the formula [carbs - fiber - sugar alcohols = net carbs] and you'll do fine.

FTS is the one if you commit to it and it looks like you are doing that.  One of the differences that I think is so important is that it is a lifestyle choice so my attitude toward food choices is different than any "diet" I've been on.  I'm losing weight but how fast isn't as important as how I feel about my future health and well being.

Welcome aboard.  If you have a question, it's very likely someone on the forum has experienced the same thing and can offer great advice.  It's all about you (and as a mom you probably aren't the center of attention very often) and it's okay to make yourself a priority.  Your family will benefit from a healthier, fitter you.

Hi Cyn! :)

One other thing you should be aware of... Carb info on nutrition labels may not always be true.
This is because the FDA is not very fussy about carb count accuracy.

Once way to avoid "hidden carbs" is to read the ingredients lists.
For me, if any of the first three ingredients is high in carbs (for example, wheat flour), I won't buy the product.

To double check after you've brought a product home, you can use "The Hidden Carb Calculator" at;
http://www.lowcarb.ca/low-carb-tools/hidden_carbs.html

This calculator is good to use BEFORE you open a package so that you can easily return it, if needed.
What you do today is what matters!

Welcome  :)   I am somewhat new too and it took me awhile to figure the carb/sugar thing out, but I finally got it  [carbs - fiber - sugar alcohols = net carbs]  and I read the book and still tried to make it more difficult.  This forum is so helpful and everyone is here for the same reason.  And I know I have tried EVERY diet imagineable.  I feel really good after being on FTS for only three weeks but it probably took me 2 out of those 3 to really figure it out. (I'm slow ::))  This is my first week of knowing how to track (thanks to the forum) and I still lost 4 pounds and that's without doing it correctly.  I was just eating way too much.  Remember portions still count. ;D

You will do great!  And feel good!
