Yum Yum Dishes.....Portion Control Plates and Bowls
« on: March 05, 2012, 01:36:39 PM »
My publicist introduced me to Yum Yum Dishes today and I think they're really cool. As you guys all know portion control is SOOOO important in our eating plan, especially for those of us who have eye's bigger than our stomachs!

You can check out Yum Yum here- http://yumyumdish.com/index.asp let me know what you think of the idea  8)

Neat idea, Doug! I use a salad plate for my dinner as it looks much fuller than a couple items on a big plate. Small plates and bowls are a good idea! I use over-sized glasses for my water so I drink more, too. I have to let my eyes fool my brain!

The idea of the smaller plate is great but I don't think the division lines on the plate are consistent with FTS.  I saw Dr. Mark Hyman on a talk show last week and his book, The Blood Sugar Solution, says half your plate with low carb veggies, a quarter with protein and a quarter with carbs.  I don't see an easy way to reconcile that with what I've found successful following FTS.

We have a 1904 set of stoneware from "Aunt Tina's" estate.  The dinner plates are 9".  I've switched from our everyday dishes to using these.  They are elegant and a nice touch of the past in our busy modern world.

That's a great idea Doug!  I try to use the smaller plates like Sarah mentioned.  I also like to use the 1 cup and 1/2 cup ramekins to keep my servings in check.  Do we see some FTS serving dishes in the future???  :)  This could be great especially if they that lids  ;)

By the way Doug...I love the new picture  ;D

I too think it's a great idea! :) :) :)

Let's face it!... Even the best of us have moments of weakness, and think we're hungrier than we really are.
Nine inch plates like this would help "enforce" portion control at those "weak" moments.

What "division lines", Andrea? :-\
If you eat "normal" portions like Doug describes in his book, they will comfortably fill a 9" plate.
What you do today is what matters!

If you look a the plate on their website, the plate is divided into a half and two quarters for veggies, protein and carbs (their words, not mine).

I am totally in favor of the 9" plate concept and use it myself.  It is the graphics on these plates that could be confusing to the uninitiated.  My opinion, of course, so entirely subject to review by the rest of the clan.

Hi Andrea, I too didn't see any division lines as you describe  :-\ I just went back and checked the web site and still couldn't find them. Where did you see them?

"The 9Plate is the perfect size plate for anyone who wants to eat correctly sized portions. The plates are also sectioned and labeled for Protein, Carbs and Veggies to help you eat the correct portions."

The lines are faint enough that they are hard to see.  This quote is from their website.  Go to the more button below the picture and this info is about halfway down the text.

Now that you mention it, you can see them on the picture with the first post here - they're very faint!

I like the idea, and also agree with TooSweet - lids!

I think there should be an FTS line of smaller portioned dishes with recipes printed on them - collect the whole set!

Hi Andrea! :)

After increasing my computer monitor's contrast, I'm able to see faint yellow division lines.

I find that my veggie portions (about 1/2 cup) take only about 1/4 of a nine inch plate.
And the veggies are most often the main carb source of my meals.
My protein is usually about 1/4 to 1/3 of a 9 inch plate depending on the protein source.

So I see now what you meant when you said;
"I don't think the division lines on the plate are consistent with FTS".

It's true, living the FTS lifestyle we don't measure portions by lines on a plate.
We should measure them by the size of our TRUE hunger and not forget our veggies.

Bottom line...

No matter how you divvy up your portions, the "Yum Yum Time is Over" on the bottom of the plate
is a great reminder that the meal is done.
What you do today is what matters!

Haha, Jo! I know what you mean. I'd be tempted with FTS dishes, but I'm pretty thrifty. I'd rather spend my money on the FOOD than the plate!
