Need urgent help.
« on: July 19, 2012, 03:36:51 PM »
Hello everybody.
I started around a month back and its going great. I have lost something like 13-14 pounds. But I now I have started missing bread...specially the Indian bread called roti. GG bran bread or la tortilla factory products are not available in India. I wanted to know what products  I can use to make some kind of Indian bread. Most of the recommended stuff  are not available. Can I use Wheat bran, soya flour, soya protien powder and maybe 10% normal wheat flour to do so? I am not sure of the counts. Flaxseed powder is also available.
Please help.
Thanks.

hi fineman - welcome .  R u in India? I'm in Australia and I can't get any of the usual products here either.  I buy my stuff online.  I know in the recipe section there is a recipe for tortilla, but I'm sure someone else will have suggestions.  I have experimented a little bit by just using my usual recipes and replacing with almond or soy flour or flax, usuing zero for sugar, etc. Some more successful than others.  Umpa is really great on the cooking advice and is able to convert your normal recipes for fts approved ones.  Personally the GG crispbrand is like eating cardboard, but that's just me. :D

Good luck.

Go to the recipe section and check under breads.  I posted a flax bread and there are other breads such as the 1 minute muffin.  These use flax seed. There might also be other bread recipes you could use.
Peace and blessings,

First off congratulations on the 14 pounds lost!!  That is so awesome  ;D ;D

As for the roti I'm sorry I'm not familiar with it so I can't suggest something in it's place.  If you submit a recipe I bet Umpa could come up with something similar.
Now for your ingredients..... If it were me I would stay away from the wheat flour.  http://www.carb-counter.org/cereal/search/Wheat%20flour/2000  Even at 10% it will shoot your carb count way up and possibly cause you to have sugar/carb cravings again.  The Wheat bran is a bit high as well http://www.carb-counter.org/cereal/search/Wheat%20bran/2000

Your best bet is to stay with the flax meal and or soy flour.  Your flax has the same number of fiber as carbohydrates so it will be 0 net carbs.   The soy flour will run about 16 net carbs per cup.  Also if you have almonds or other nut you can grind them and make your own nut flour.  You might give this recipe a try http://fattoskinny.net/index.php?topic=1341.msg12118#msg12118  It really is wonderful  ;)  I hope this helps

Hello Fineman :) a good replacement for Roti (Indian flat bread) can be made using Flax. Remember now, all replacements are just that... replacements. They will be a different flavor and texture than the original but will become your standards over time.

1 1/2 cups flax seed meal
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt 4 drops of Zero sweetener (if you want sweet)
2 eggs
1/2 cup water
4 teaspoons olive oil

1- Mix all your ingredients until a smooth batter is formed, let rest 5 minutes and check how thick it is. If you need to thin it down add a bit more water and mix.

2- Heat up your Tava (griddle) and grease, pour on the batter cook and flip :)

You can also try adding in some soy flour for a different texture. Use the ingredients you have locally and experiment. If you come up with a really cool recipe please share it here :)

Hi fineman! :)

Bran fiber is OK... In fact it's 0 carb. 8)
But most "bran" is carby. So be careful and read labels! :o
What you do today is what matters!

Oat fiber will also be helpful.i would love to do some Indian Recipes if you would like to post them in Ask Umpa. The easist bread is spinach bread in the Fat to Skinny Bakery Book. Its almond flour but has more the texture of white bread. The cream cheese pancakes on the forum are more like crepes and may give you that thin bread you are looking for. Get me a recipe and i would love to do this for you. ;)
