Do nuts or seeds play a role in a low carb diet?  Also, I chew a lot of Spry (xylitol) gum all day, is this ok?

Yes yes and yes Haha   Most of us eat nuts and seeds all the time.  It's a big part of my diet using ground nuts to make flour to bake with.  The Spry is great as well!!  The xylitol is great for your teeth too   ;D

I probably should add that you should stick with the lower carb nuts.  Almonds, walnuts and pecans are among my stash that I  keep on hand at all times.

It depends upon what else you are eating.  You can look up the carb counts in each type and decide how many carbs you want to "spend" on nuts.  Making those decisions is part of figuring out how to make FTS work for you.

For a 1 ounce serving, here are the net carbs for the three types of nuts Shawn recommended:
Almonds - 2.7 net grams of carbs
Pecans - 1.7 net grams of carbs
Walnuts - 1.7 net grams of carbs

Hi maidmarian,

Yes I have to admit nuts and seeds are one of my little passions as far as treats go and at certain times of the day I can often be seen rifling around the cupboard looking for a handful of nuts just to amuse my taste buds for a little while.

But like Andrea has said it's good to be choosy about what types of nuts you eat, pecans and walnuts are indeed nuts that contain some of the lowest amount of carbohydrates but top of the list of those to stay away from particularly this time of the year are roasted chestnuts, they contain anything up to 20 times as many carbs as pecans and walnuts do.

As fro xylitol, well out of all the synthetic sweeteners, that is probably the one that gives us the least problem particularly in its purest form but if you have pets do remember to keep it away from them as it can be extremely harmful if not deadly for many pets but more so to dogs,

Hope that's useful,

Mark

Thank you Mark.  Yes, I do know that xylitol will kill my little doggies whom I love dearly.  You would think they would put warnings on the Spry gum and other xylitol things about this!  I hate that.  As for nuts, I really like walnuts, almonds and my very favorite are pistachios, BUT I'm afraid to even eat them, although they are very healthy, as I don't know if I could stop (trigger food).  Although, I'm not even hungry (just have a raging sweet tooth), so I could prob. handle nuts right now (doesn't that sound kinky?!!  LOL)...so, for travel, I should bring some with me.  Thanks again.  I'm eating VERY low carb, but still in my 2 week period.  Not seeing or feeling weight loss though sadly.

I buy the prepackaged nuts  like almonds. This way I do not go over board and I do not have to worry about weighing anything if I am in a rush  ;D

I make sure all my nuts and seeds are raw, healthy, unsalted organic when possible

I like sunflower seeds, and a little bit like walnuts, almonds, pecans....probable eat about 1 ounce a week.  Mariann, you say you're eating very low carb?  How many carbs a day do you aim for?

I love pistachios too but you have to be careful not to overdo them.

Me, too! ;D ;D ;D
I don't eat them often, as the temptation to eat too many is strong!
