A very interesting article
« on: February 20, 2013, 08:47:32 PM »
This article is about the effect of cold on our metabolism.  Would you take cold showers, sleep without covers, and take mile-long "shiver walks" in minimal clothing in order to take off weight?

Hypothermia here we come.  brrrrrrrrr

Whilst I believe you can use more energy freezing your 'buns' off, this does seem a little extreme.  I also know in extreme conditions your body starts shutting down.  Whilst reading the article I just could not see an extremely overweight person coping with this procedure.  Extremes of anything usually do not have happy endings.  Immune systems do not like being compromised.  Frostbite anyone?  Pneumonia?

The fact that the metabolism will speed up when we're cold has been known for MANY years.
That is how our bodies try to preserve our core temperatures for survival.

But purposely subjecting oneself to environmental extremes to lose weight is stupidity, at best.
Doing this can weaken the system to fight off infections and other maladies.
This is why when we get cold and wet, we are more prone to sickness.

I certainly hope and pray that none of the visitors to our forum attempt it.
But drinking ice cold water is safe and helpful to weight loss! ;)

When I read Tim Fariss' 4-Hour Body book, I thought this was one of his crazier suggestions.  However, I tried to follow his suggestion once.  I got in a nice warm shower, and after soaping up, I turned down the hot water.  OMG, taking a cold shower was awful.  I will stick to FTS, thank you.

Scott thanks for the interesting article. Well more amusing than interesting.

I'm with Morgan on this one, I just can't see anybody who has a problem with weight wanting to go to the extreme that this article describes and  to answer Andrea's question yes I suspect somebody was paid to write this. After all it's gotta be worth all of five cents.

Cheers,
