Have you experienced this?
« on: June 10, 2013, 04:35:14 PM »
Just wondering if any of you have experienced what I am going through? So I tried getting back on the low-carb lifestyle this past week...and failed miserably. I was doing great at first, then I fell and fell again and even carb binged one day...or a couple days. Anyhow, I have one kidney because I donated one a little over a year ago, so my body tends to swell very easily...sometimes it also gets dehydrated very easily. Anyhow, after my binging and yoyoing this past week, I woke up today with an extra 6 pounds of fluid...I'm so swollen my fingers don't even want to bed and my joints are killing me. Has this ever happened to any of you when went over your carb limit by accident or otherwise? Just curious.
May you be blessed in all your endeavors, but most importantly, may you be humble. God keep you.

Hi Taby, ou should check with your doctor. As you know the kidney's job is to filter fluid from the blood and expel it as urine. If you're experiencing this kind of severe swelling and only have one kidney your doc should be notified.

I agree with Doug, too!

Assuming that you don't have a medical issue causing the swelling,
drink a LOT more water!

Water retention is quite common with a low carb lifestyle.
By drinking AT LEAST 64 ounces of PLAIN water everyday,
you'll help your body get rid of excess fluids.

I emphasize PLAIN water because our bodies do not have to "process" it before using it.
It's the BEST for flushing out toxins, too! :)

Thanks everyone. I took a lasix, which I'm not supposed to do because of having only one kidney and it's hard on them, but I did and I lost 6 pounds of fluid overnight! What's crazy mouseissue is that I don't swell when I low carb, I seem to swell when I'm doing higher carbs...I was thinking it might be because I had too many carbs the other day. Anyhow, my doctor isn't available until August so I may just have to go to ER :\

Since you said that you had been binging on carbs it could be inflammation and your body holding onto the fluid.  Simply dropping the carbs and drinking lots of water will release the excess fluid from your body.  Hope you see the Dr though to get checked out!

I did go to ER but they said everything looked good. I think my body did freak out and hold onto all that fluid. I feel a lot better today though and now more swelling :D

Hi Taby,

Something is not right here. You really should see your medical advisor.

I sure am trying to get help. My primary care physician can only see me in August, the community health clinic here can't see me until July...my only option is to go back to ER :\ I guess that's what I am going to have to do.

I swell a lot too (but have both kidneys) however I've had kidney stones in the past. The odd thing is I haven't had any since I was 19 almost 20 yrs ago. I wonder what I'm doing differently then back then? I don't know! I hope you find out what's going on!

Well that rules out carbs as being the culprit. How's your sodium intake been lately? Are you drinking enough water?

Hi, Michele! :)

OMG!!!.. As a fellow kidney stone "survivor",
I can relate to what you did NOT say about the experience!
It's a kind of pain I NEVER want to feel again!... EVER!!!

When I was younger in my late 30s and 40s, I had a number of attacks.
In 1998, the last one put me into the hospital for emergency removal of a LARGE one about to "exit".

Shortly after that attack, I had surgery to remove two stones (one from each kidney).
They were HUGE!... One was 20mm and the other 22mm! :o :o :o

My urologist told me I was not drinking enough water.
He told me even mild dehydration can build kidney stones.
So that is when I decided to drink at least 70-80 oz. of PLAIN water EVERY day!

Since then, I have not had a problem with those evil little rocks, thank God!!! :) :) :)
And water has become my lifelong best friend!
