Wake up...Weight down!
« on: January 22, 2014, 11:07:41 AM »
Like Quiltart1, I too was part of the KPNW fat to skinny challenge.  The challenge was to proceed through the holidays without gaining any weight...

I started Oct. 28, 2013 at 39yrs old, 6' 1", 333lbs.

On the last day of 2013 my scale read 294.  Almost cracked the 40lb mark, just shy at 39 lost at that point.
Christmas was brutal with the cookies, candy, pies...pies and more pies.  I got a dehydrator for Christmas and have run a bunch of fruit (for the kids) and jerky for me.  Still playing with the marinade, but thankfully I can eat all the salted, cured meats I can get my hands on!  I'm on my last little bit of a 3lb salami from molinari's deli in San Fran...this is the best salami I've ever had, so I get my cousin to bring some up when he comes back to Oregon for holidays and such.  The tough part is wanting to have it on a sammich or crackers.
One of the hardest parts is grocery shopping.  Virtually the entire store is off limits!
In My family we all have issues with our weight.  I figure heredity plays a huge (pardon the pun) role.  And our metabolisms just don't burn what others do.  I did a resting metabolism test with a dietician last year and her test showed my baseline was something like 1500 cal/day!...which is well below the 1900-2400 'averages' you find in the literature.  I have been weight training 2 days a week just to build up my metabolism.

unexpected side effects I've experienced so far:
Fewer 'gut' problems
Fewer ( none ) low blood sugar episodes
Sensitivity in my teeth
My restraint against cheating!

The basics to loosing weight are simple...eat less and move more.  Doug does a good job of explaining what to eat less of and why.

I feel like I've found my groove and I know I can get to 285 and lower.

My goals for this little endeavor (1-6), long term goals (7-9):
1) stick with it - check
2) log my eating - check
3) try stuff in the book -check
4) don't be hungry - check
5) plan meals better - doing better, always room for improvement
6) loose 30 - check
7) weigh less than 285 ( purchase life insurance ) goal is to hit this before the end of march when our 3rd child is due
8) weigh less than 230 ( start scuba diving again )
9) maintain weight about 220 (or less)

My current weight is 286...One away from goal #7!    Down 47lbs to date!

Thank you for the opportunity and for being the catalyst!

Josh

Welcome Josh.  Your are well on your way to reaching your goals.  Congratulations are in order for all you have already achieved especially loosing 47 pounds.

The holidays have to be the hardest time of year for anyone on any kind of weight loss plan -- including FTS.  Thank goodness they are over.

Keep us posted on your progress.  Log on often and add to the conversation.  Browse the recipes here on the forum.  The people here have come up with some amazing things -- things you would never think you could eat on a low-carb eating plan.  Most of all, enjoy life to its fullest.

Welcome to the FTS family, Josh!!! :) :) :) :) :) :)

You are doing absolutely, GREAT!!! ;D ;D ;D

About our metabolisms...
After years and years of carb abuse, our metabolisms become damaged.
Part of that damage is our metabolic baselines get messed up. It's like they get "stuck" in fat-storage mode.

By following the FTS rules, we can heal that damage.
Remember that it took time to mess them up, it also takes time to heal them.
Every day we we live FTS, we heal more, and more.

I agree that we can have genetic tendencies toward weight gain.
That is, we are prone to extreme carb abuse, and suffer the consequences.
A similar mechanism exists for alcoholics. But with us, it's about the carbs.

As Doug explains in his book, exercise is a necessary component for optimal health.
But it's a VERY bad substitute for controlling what, and how much, we eat.

Keep up the great job!... You've got this down, Josh! :) :) :)
You're a wonderful example for your family!

Plateau #1 coincided with the change to the new scale...great.  Not only am I not loosing weight, it reads heavier than the old one...it's like a double kick to the groin!
Looking at my food log, I think I need more calories!  I have had some days where I barely crack 1000 cal.
I always eat three meals plus snacks.  I'm never hungry.  I drink at least 80oz water a day.
Maybe I need some good snack ideas?  I'm going through jerky as fast as I can make it!
