Does Low Carb Cause Very Frequent Urination?

I've been following the book's suggestions for 4 months now, have dropped 54 lbs and brought my A1C down from 9.8 to 6.4 (though I think it will be even less when I get tested next week). However, I've been having very frequent urination since eating this way (every 2 hrs at night and many times during the day - sometimes 7 times in 2 hours). I  wondered if eating this way could be causing kidney problems? I noticed when I had my mini binge two weeks ago, the urination slowed wayyyy down...

I'm just still really exhausted all the time from the lack of sleep - can't even rest during the day really... Any insight? Or anyone else have this problem?!

We drink alot of water to flush fat, maybe back up on the water abit(you are flushing fat from your body).My mom has kidney disease and she eats low carb and doen't have any issues.Speak to your doctor if it continues. ;)

Actually at dr now. He thinks I'm not drinking ENOUGH! But he's doing renal panel on me and says it also could be the Metormin... I'm kinda freaking out a little over this!

Oh, he also thought I might be in TOO deep a ketosis...?! Said I should try increasing carbs slightly and see what happens. Is this possible? To be getting too FEW carbs and for that to cause this diuresis effect? I HAD been eating around 11-14 per day the past two weeks just trying to get back on track...

Hi Jacki, this is a first for me, I've not ever experienced this issue. Like Umpa said, we drink lots of water. Maybe you should think about taking your last glass of liquid at say 7pm?

I actually had been drinking very little lately trying to get this to slow down... Maybe 3-4 of the 16 oz water bottles a day. I sure hope this isn't something bad :(

Hi. This is my first post - I am mostly a lurker. Lol.  :) But I really felt I should comment on this because I also have this frequent urination issue when I go low carb. In fact, It is the reason I can't stick with it for more than 2 wks. I just get exhausted going potty so much Especially at night. I did read somewhere that low carb eating causes a diuretic effect. If I can find the link I will post it later. Anyway, I wanted you to know that you are not alone.

Welcome to the forum.  I don't know if it's the low carbing or all the water we drink, but I agree I get tired of all the peeing too.  But flushing out the system is what it's all about. :)

Glad you took the step from lurking to posting.  Yay.  Hope to hear from you more often :)

Jackie I wonder if you are taking in too much protein?  My urologist told me that if I over do it my system will try and expel it....kinda like when you have a very high blood sugar with diabetes your kidneys start working overtime.  I have to balance my diet very closely.  Not too much protein....not too much veggie that are high oxalate....and drink plenty of water otherwise I start going going going  ;)   I hope they get to the bottom of it though   Keep us posted  :D

Trying to understand the "science" behind this...!  Doug - ??!!

For an update... Today I went back to have all my regular labs done for my endocrinologist whom I see next week. So hopefully something will help solve this mystery!

However…  I’ve been doing my own research, reading, etc., and I feel I may have figured things out.  First, my “carb experiment” over the weekend definitely slowed down the urination - I did take myself all the way out of ketosis and am assuming that my glycogen stores have filled back up which required the water from my system, right?  And now that today I’m back on the low carb by Wed it will probably start up again (the urination issue).

But what I’m wondering now is if this is because of Vitamin D toxicity…?? I’ve always been LOW in Vit. D but for a couple of years had been taking 20,000 - 30,000 IU daily because I’m so large and read that the larger you are the more you require.  My SEVERE tension headaches totally went away on this regimen, and my levels were always between 50-80.  Back in December I had tests run and it showed a level of 98!  Also showed a slightly elevated calcium level of 10.5. I only found out about these results a few weeks ago when I saw my Lyme doctor.  I’m thinking now that the low carb diet brought my Vit. D levels up naturally and I really didn’t need the supplementation any more - or not as much anyway. I stopped the Vit. D completely for a few days and my headaches came back so I started back up but only at the 20,000 level thinking that would be ok.  Well, now I think it was actually my pillow causing the return of the headaches, though I’m not positive.  Got a new support pillow and they’re better, so we’ll see…

But upon reading about all this, it seems that too much Vit. D can cause too much calcium which causes polyuria!  OR… in the past I had a temporary bout of hyperparathyroidism which caused too much calcium which at that time did NOT cause the polyuria, but I wasn’t doing low carb at that time either and my blood sugar was terribly out of control. So now my theory is that this excess Vit. D > excess calcium + the low carb diet is causing the major polyuria and that when I eat more carbs it slows it down because of the glycogen thing.  Would this make scientific sense?!  Anyway, in the meantime while I’m waiting on these lab results, I’m going to say off the Vit. D (and hope the headaches don’t come back) and maybe things will start leveling out for me soon.  I’m actually HOPING this is the problem so I won’t have to stop eating low carb!  And I hope we caught it before any permanent kidney damage was done - but I’m feeling we did since there was no protein in my urine or anything like that.

Thank you for the warm welcome Jackibar and Toosweet. Jackibar, I will keep you in my prayers that you get it figured out. All these comments have given me some food for thought and I shall try some experimenting of my own. I am not giving up :) And just want to add that I Love this group and the support you all give each other is awesome!

Interesting, TooSweet... I honestly don't know. It's definitely possible though. This is sure teaching me how crucial it is for things to all be in balance!

Welcome to the family ymariee  8) Jackie, I don't have an answer for you based on my personal studies and experiences. I have popped around the web to see if others in Ketosis experience frequent urination and it seems some do. BUT, it also seems that it's a short lived experience. Here's a reprint from another site to review, it's right on the money.

Ketosis symptoms are a function of the way the body gets rid of the excess ketone bodies which build up in the blood stream when a person eats a low carb, diet.

In short, the body has three ways of dealing with excess ketone bodies:

    First, the muscles liver and brain can burn them for energy in the cells.
    Second, the body can breathe ketones out through the lungs.
    And third, the body can flush ketones out through the kidneys and urine.

The ketosis symptoms associated with the benign dietary ketosis caused by eating a low carb, diet are not dangerous. They may differ for each individual, with the most common symptoms being:

    Ketosis breath, which has a fruity odor, and the person in deep ketosis may feel a sort of slight burning in the nose and a slight smell of ammonia.

    Dry mouth, which is alleviated by drinking more water.

    A slight headache at first which goes away in a few days.

    In the first week of beginning a low carb diet, most people experience frequent urination followed by fatigue, as the kidneys release extraneous water stores. Minerals such as sodium, magnesium and potassium are also lost with excreted urine, and it is the mineral loss that causes the fatigue. This can be offset by eating more salt, drinking more fluids, and increasing the intake of magnesium and potassium containing foods. (Dairy foods and avocados are high in potassium, and you can drink broth for more sodium.)

Ketone bodies become detectable in the urine. Ketone bodies are leftover fragment molecules created by the natural process of burning body fat for fuel. Diabetics and low carb dieters use a product called Ketostix to check for the presence of ketones in the urine, although each group does this for different reasons. If ketones are present, the stick turns purple.

    After several days of ketosis, there may be a sense of euphoria, or an experience of high energy.

    Very clear thinking, and a lack of "brain fog".
