Optimum Nutrician Diet Bars
« on: March 30, 2014, 01:53:12 AM »
Have not been able to find these (the "Optimum Nutrition Diet Bars") at the suggested website, or anywhere else on the internet. The regular Bars that I was able to find were up to 34g of carbs (almost that many net)! Everywhere that claimed to have them (places like Walmart, Amazon, etc.) did not actually have any. Anyone have an answer to this problem? I counted the ingredients in one of the "Atkins Bars" and the total was about 40 Carbs.... for a "healthy" nutrition and weight loss bar.... are you serious folks?

Hi Mark I am Umpa,Dougs wife if I can help you please ask.I use to buy them at Netrition but they dont have them anymore, they have several other choices though.Remember to subtract fiber and sugar alcohols from carb count.Beware of Atkins bars they tend to cause excess gas and tummy issues.I have a column on the homepage called ask umpa where I can convert your favorite foods to fat  to skinny friendly.Enjoy the forum! :)

Hi, Mark! :)

If we're talking about "Optimum Nutrition Protein Bars",
Optimum Nutrition discontinued making them. :( :( :(

Since I started FTS, I've always kept several boxes (assorted flavors) in the pantry.
So it looks like I'll be hunting for good replacements, too.

There are other good bars out there.
But I've yet to find any that have only 1 (or less) net carbs per bar.

And Umpa's right about Adkins products! They should be avoided.

Has anyone tried the Quest Nutrition Bars?  They have between 3 and 7 net carbs and a lot of fiber.  Wondering if they'd be okay.

Thanks Umpa:

Will stay away until we know for sure.  Was just looking for something I can throw in my purse, a lot of early mornings BAD options for lunch.

Open to suggestions for "convenient" grab and go stuff.

I was only recently introduced to Quest bars so I'm glad I read the article!  In looking up some recipes for homemade protein bars there are several out there that use a special ingredient to bind everything together - but it has to be ordered online as well and I don't know much about it.  Just relaying what I've seen ;). Sorry not much help!  If you want to see the recipe I could probably go back and find it so just say the word.

Hi Sunshine:

Would love to see the recipe for the homemade bars, but only if I'm not putting you out too much.  I've made some before with Whey protein powder and peanut butter but they weren't too good.

Thanks for responding!

You know thats something I should work on for my new cookbook.I love protein bars for convenience when I am on the run.Madoctor when I am away from home I  throw low carb tortillas in my car and find a deli or fast food restaurant.I will take the burger out of the bun and place it in the tortilla. At the deli I order my favorite meats and cheeses and make  a wrap. They always have condiments there in the little packets.I never leave home without a cooler in my trunk because I like to be prepared. Also beef jerky ,boiled eggs ,fruit ,roll ups(deli),baby quiches and nuts are all good for food on the run.

Hi Umpa:

I found this recipe in an old file and tried it out yesterday.  It was pretty good.  My tweeks are in () near the ingredients.  Comments/Changes?

Peanut Butter Protein Bars Ingredients:

2 tablespoons no-sugar peanut butter
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1/2 teaspoon liquid stevia
1/4 cup Sweetner (i used less than 1/8 of a cup)
1 scoop Whey protein powder (I used vanilla)

Melt peanut butter and butter in microwave or double boiler. Mix in the sweeteners thoroughly. Add protein powder and stir until it forms a ball. (You may need to use clean hands to aid in the thorough mixing.) Roll up in ball and knead a bit; then separate into even portions, shaping as desired. Refrigerate until firm.

Makes 4 bars. Approx 2 carbs per bar.
