Yes Umpa, I brew beer. I planted three kinds of hops and a couple acres of barley.

So, it is 8/20/14 and wondering how all of the gardens are coming along.........

My collard are ripe for the picking.
Tomatoes are coming along but the weather is cooling down one week and extremely hot the next.  Driving the plants nutty.
Sage looks good.
Planted one sweet and one hot pepper plant and doing good.
What else what else...

You know, plant four tomatoe plants and you would think one would get so many tomatoes that one would be giving them away.  Well, this one only has gotten maybe five tomatoes all summer long.  What's with THAT!

Two eggplants are flowering but not producing.  Going to have to take a good look and see what's going on.

My walking egyptian onions were cool but got walking in all different directions so harvested.

Raspberries are done for the year - not much of a yield.

Blackberries are just now producing and yummy.

Black currents (3 bushes) produced greatly this year - cooked them up - got rid of the seeds - used as a juice concentrate. Squeezed lemon juice in it and put a little bit of xylitol for add a touch of sweetness.

Canned bread and butter pickles and dill and some dilly beans - bought from produce stand.  So far 100 jars of pickles.  Going to do another 75 jars this weekend.

Well, that's the scoop - what's going on in your gardens - Share!

Umpa, it's you and me.... :D
Have you ever tried 'crockett' beans which grow bushlike?  To die for.  They are absolutely a wonderful bean and you can also dill them and have great crunch.  Or just harvest and cut up into salad for a nice sweet taste.  You can find these in any of the garden magazines that come in every year.  Give them a try - you won't regret it.

Bye for now,

Ellie

Ellie doug built me a teepee for my pole beans I think they are Kentucky Blues. They went crazy and they got alot of airflow so they didnt mold up with all the rain we have been having.I can eat them raw off the plant they are so good. My eggplant is doing  good too super excited about that. I wonder if there is a indian dance I can do to stop the rain?? :D

Well, in Wisconsin we sure do need the rain.  It has been pretty dry.  So, limit your dancing to your region....LOL!

I like the teepee for the pole beans.  I have a few trellisis but I like the primitive notion of the teepee.  Maybe try out next year.

Have a nice day and wonderful Labor Day weekend.  I can't even believe we are celebrating this holiday when it feels like the spring season only began.

Well Umpa, you must have danced for the whole state of wisconsin - my rain barrel is 'full' - WOW - what an amazing concept - although, we will have to drain it after first light frost I suppose.

Why drain it why not insulate it? Doug doesnt drain his but its running all the time it supplies 3 homes.Do you shut down your cabin?

Yes, we shut down our cabin after our last hun last November or Early December, if the weather holds up.  So, I'm not sure we could insulate it enough if there was a hard frost or wind chill factor of way way below zero.
