Missing Carbs in label
« on: June 28, 2010, 11:47:53 AM »
we are just getting started with this "program" and have been really reading labels for the last few days.  the one thing we can't figure out is what are the "missing" carbs and do they need to be counted.  we've found many labels that will list the total carbs but when it breaks down those carbs into Sugar and Fiber (just as the book explains), many times those totals do NOT match the total carb count.  what are the "missing" carbs and do they need to be counted?  or do we simply look at sugar grams and forget the rest?

net carbs in each product are as follows: carbs minus any fibers and any sugar alcohals :) when doug refers to "hidden" carbs in the book,he is talking about foods that people think are healthy and good for you,but in reality contain sugar/carbs that make you fat..... ;D

thank you for the input.

i understand you subtract out the fibers and sugar alcohols to achieve net carbs.  but if you look at some labels the breakdown of carbs (fiber, sugar, sugar alcohols) does not equal the total carbs listed.  some of the them have a very wide difference.  do we need to be concerned with the difference or simply pay attention to just the sugar grams?  the label below shows what i'm trying to figure out.  are the net carbs on this label 28g?  notice it only shows 5 sugar grams and 3 grams for fiber.  there are a BUNCH of carbs here that are unaccounted for.  if that is the case one serving of whatever this was a label for would put us passed our daily carb intake correct?

net carbs in this product per serving size is as follows>>>
                           total carbs=31 minus fiber=3
31-3= 28 net carbs per serving>> this is not a good product for you to use on FTS :'(

some products will break it down to net carbs, but most do not, hence you have to do it yourself by taking total carbs listed and subtracting all fiber and sugar alcohols. and yes one serving would put you over the limit ???

yes, it is confusing, total carbs listed on labels is not the products net carbs :D and net carbs is the # you want to consider when choosing foods.

I think what's confusing you is the separately listed sugar. Total carbs includes the sugar and the fiber, it also includes the starch, fructose and whatever else constitutes carbs. Always look at the total carbs per serving and subtract the fiber and.....if present on the label, sugar alcohols to arrive at net carbs. Katary did it correctly for you. Don't be afraid to ask 100 more times if you need too until it's second nature to you....this is the KEY to your success.
