lettuce wraps

Okay, I bought some red leaf lettuce thinking it would make a pliable wrap... not working so well.  What are you guys using. Red leaf makes it too messy to eat unless I cram the whole wrap in my mouth at one time.
What am I doing wrong?

Maybe that's a California thing? But we have lots of it here.

I use romaine lettuce or iceberg lettuce.
