Canada entry #65
« on: July 20, 2010, 01:48:04 PM »
I recently got a horrible second slap to my face. The first one came when, 18 months ago, I had an emergency hysterectomy and they found ovarian cancer, fortunately in stage one. After 6 months of chemo, and a year off work, I now weigh in at 210 pounds, 40 more than after the surgery.

A follow up appointment with my oncologist this past week was the second slap. Get my BMI down (now 36) to 25 or be prepared to fight another cancer in 5-10 years. Until this, I always knew there was a significant link between diabetes and obesity, but having a normal blood sugar does not mean you can't get a terminal disease.

At 44, I am far too young to be in menopause and far to young to get cancer again. I need to lose the weight, to rediscover health and find the beautiful woman under all of this fat. I have two daughters, 19 and 20 who I need to teach healthy eating to. My lessons could affect the health of their unborn children.

I grew up with parents who fed me meat and potatoes (and lots of them). Salad was something you had to eat at Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving. Vegetables were canned peas and corn. I had to eat everything on my plate or it would be there the next meal. Although I changed my eating habits substantially living as an adult, I still have unhealthy attitudes towards eating, particularly what, when and why I eat certain foods.

Please teach me how to become healthy. I promise it will affect many people in a positive way.
