Jicama...OMG it's amazing
« on: August 19, 2011, 11:53:28 AM »
Yes I know, I'm late to the Jicama party...but it's hard to find here in Orlando. My local Publix is stocking it now so of course I bought it. My husband chopped it up like you would fried potatoes and it was AMAZING! Definitely my new favorite thing! If you are late to the Jicama party like I was, I highly recommend it.  :) :)

Sherrie, I see Doug suggests it raw with a little salt.  I just bought a couple yesterday.  How did you/hubby fix yours?
Look out Hawaii, I'm on my way!!

Well first off, who knew you could eat it raw! Yummy!

We cut it up just like you would if you were making fried potatoes for breakfast. Thin slices, but not thin like potato chips. Placed them in a pan of oil and fried them until they were golden brown, just like if you were frying regular potatoes. We added some salt and pepper to taste and they were great. It was so close to potatoes that if you told me they were potatoes, I would have believed it. Super good. We are going to try french fries with them this weekend. :)

Had them last night  :)  Boil, shred (with cheese grater), salt & pepper, sour cream, butter and cheddar cheese - bake for about 20 minutes!  Favorite at our house.

Thanks to Sherrie and Amber for 2 great ideas.  I had seen a post from Katary about cheese fries once.  It took me a little while to find it.  Now I have 3 ways to cook or just eat raw. Yippppeeee!

Had this for dinner last night.  Cooked it like french fries and had with hamburger steak.   Hubby said "this is pretty good" LOL.  Thanks everyone for your help.  Have something new to eat.  Amazing how we never knew this even existed until FTS!

Found this online...kinda neat..wanted to share.  If you scroll down this guy does 3 short videos on Jicama.  There is also a link for the Nutrition value of Jicama and some other ways to prepare it.

I love it too. Fortunately for me, my husband doesn't care for it much, which means leftovers for me! When it's raw, it reminds me of apples.
