Sugar Alcohols / sugar alcohols and gassy/stomach pain
« on: June 30, 2010, 01:40:41 PM »
Has anyone had any problems like this?  I just had a couple products yesterday - no carbs, but one of them had 24 grams of sugar alcohols and later in the afternoon, I had some stomach problems I don't normally have.  I read on another site that it can cause problems especially with IBS.  Has anyone else had problems.  I had the best chocolate/carmel candy bar with no carbs and it was great!!!!!  But maybe not if it caused my tummy troubles.

General Questions / A SPLENDA QUESTION
« on: June 29, 2010, 09:29:47 PM »
Hi all,

First of all - just a note - I came through my birthday dinner with flying colors - they had steak with no marinade and salad (both great for me) and then ther was the baked potato, rolls, baked beans and corn - all of which did not scream my name (well maybe the corn) and then during cake time I had my sugar free jello and whipped cream!!!  Guess what?  I rock!!!!!

Anyhow, I had sweet tea - about 3 glasses made with Splenda and I knew I had seen "something" about Splenda having carbs - I told my friend but she said no - it's great.  I read the posts when I got home.  I'm trying to figure out how bad I was.

Also, I usually take my iced tea with nothing and after drinking 3 glasses  (HOT, HOT, HOT IN AZ),  of the splenda tea I had some very bad heartburn.  I don't think I've had heartburn like this in, well forever.  Could the Splenda cause bad heartburn.  Inquiring minds and all that!!

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D!

You all are great!  I called my friend and she thinks her husband might grill steaks so that means salad probably - which gets me half way there too.  I will bring some stuff like you all suggested.

But I gotta tell ya, the turkey image you had Doug really brought the point home.  I'm sitting reading and at first I said to myself, "huh" and then like lightning it hit me!!!!!!!  What a terriffic way to remind me of what has just happened this past week and how I feel and how I want to keep feeling.

Many cudos to you all!

General Questions / birthday dinner to attend tonight YIKES

Hi all,

I was just - 20 min ago, invited to a birthday dinner tonight for my best friend.  A lot of people will be there.  Even though I have lost the 10 lbs in my first week -YIPEE!!!!  I am still not perfect enough not to fall off of the "wagon" when enticed with yummies I haven't had in a week.  Any suggestions?

I've thought about eating before I go, drinking water, but I'm still nervous.  It's my best friend, otherwise I wouldn't go.  She's very supportive, so no problems there - I'm just worried about my temptation level and the other folks.

Well I knew it was the right choice to pick up your book Doug!  I'm down 10 lbs in 7 days!!!!!  I am so excited to get a good start because it gives me the motivation to continue what I KNOW is the perfect lifestyle for me.  I already feel better and am looking forward to feeling even better.  I've checked out the recipes and read loads of peoples posts to get am much info as possible.

My pastor at church yesterday told me he thought I looked thinner and I was shocked because I didn't think it would be noticeable!  Thank you again and thanks to everyone on this board for helping me out!

Beebs - OMG  that looks delicious and easy (right up my alley)  Do you or Gary have any idea what the storage in the fridge is - a few days or longer?  Thanks again  I am sooo trying it (it definitely might help my sweet tooth!)

Ok then, good to know - I guess I'm doing something right then!  Thanks again for helping out.  BTW, Doug - I have to say your book was so good - it was basic and I loved the print like a text book.  It made so much  sense that after dieting for years I already knew deep down what was keeping me fat, but needed to be reminded rather vividly what was truly happening with my body and the food that all the companies shove down our throats with their advertising etc., Some books and programs are so technical that I just want ;D to go to sleep.  I've been on countless diets as many others have also probably been, but this just stuck in my head and said "THIS IS IT".

What is weird is that I saw a diet in a woman's magazine, you know - the kind that has a diet every week and they get my money every week, and I went to Barnes and Noble to find it.  I couldn't find it and couldn't remember the name of the book, but I perused all the books and yours just hit me!  I kept looking and went back to look at it three times and finally said - I really like this, this makes sooooooo much sense, and he's a REAL person like me!  The Lord was looking out for me and directing me to your book.

I just want to thank you for writing the book for others so we too can know the truth.  You are really an inspiration!!!

Thank you Doug and Katary!

Thanks guys for your input - prior to FTS I would eat maybe yogurt or cereal or oatmeal for breakfast or maybe even ice cream or left over mexican and italian food (favorites), snacks are usually cheese or cookies or chips, lunch just like maybe a half a sandwich or something (I might take it home and try to finish later - like a 6 inch sub from subway).  Dinner - I might pass and just have cheese  or maybe a part of a piece of chicken, or 1 bowl of mac n cheese or maybe 3 oz of steak (at home) Eating out I usually order whatever (and it can get expensive) but never eat more than half - like half a piece of chicken or some soup and a quarter of lasagna at Olive Garden.  That's what  I usually have eaten.

The last few days I've had hard boiled eggs maybe 2 a day, some cheese (maybe 2 oz total), low carb ice cream - some olives, a little chicken, and today I had 2 scrambled eggs with cheese and couldn't finish it.

I guess I might be able to make some of Doug's snack type recipies at first.  I just want to try to get my nutrition in too.   I was worried that if I don't get enough calories that I would not lose weight.

I do have a huge sweet tooth that I am fighting but a little of the ice cream has helped.  If I could I'd eat sweets all day.  Thanks for the ideas!

Ok, I am really not trying to be a pain, but.....  I have a question about total calories.  I know eating too much of even the low carb stuff will stop you from losing, but I have problems (because of my stomach stapling), not eating enough during the day.  Previously - I had no problem because I snacked on sweets, cookies, cakes, etc during day and there were my calories (not nutritious - but calories)

Ever since my stomach stapling I have a hard time with meats unless very tender (like crockpot chicken breasts till they fall apart), hard veggies, or even getting a half cup of veggies at a time in - usually it doesn't go down well and I'm guessing you know the results.  (I've had over 10,000 in dental work due to the vomiting problems - with another 10,000 dollars still.)  Anyhow,  what do you suggest - just eating all day or what.  I don't work, but at the present I'm not much of a cook - I've relied on fast food and eating out.

I really want to get a handle on this for my health and I am watching my 18 year old daughter go down the same path.  Any ideas FTS folks?

Hi all!

This is the beginning of my 4th day and I have a couple of questions.  First, if you go over 20 carbs by a few does it stop your weight loss.  I'm just afraid if I don't count properly or have a small sip or bite of something that it will stop my loss.  Also my friend who did Atkins said that once you get in ketosis (which I assume we want) and you mess it up by going over the carbs and that everything stops and it takes about 3-4 days to get the ball rolling again.

Also, since I started I've had a weird taste in my mouth - kind of like a metal taste or even, and I know it sounds gross, a mothball type of taste.  I don't know if this is normal or perhaps because of a couple of new foods I've tried.  I've had one Zevia soda and thought there was a bit of an aftertaste that didn't want to go right away, and I've had the La Tortilla Factory tortillas and the low carb ice cream.  I couldn't find the Breyers so I got the Dreyers which I think is 6 grams.  I found out that the CarbSmart is at Frys (Kroger) and will get it there.

Anyway, could this cause the taste in my mouth or what do you think?  Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Francine

Thanks to everyone for the very warm welcome!  It is so good to know that there are others sharing the ups and downs of life and hopefully the womderful feeling that I (and all of you) will get and have gotten from getting rid of the excess baggage that weighs down our lives for good.  I am working very hard and will definitely look at the recipes for ideas - especially for sweets.

I purchased the recipe book from the site and was looking at it last night.  There are some really good ideas!

Thanks again to everyone!!!!!

General Questions / Started yesterday!!
« on: June 22, 2010, 09:12:08 PM »
Hi all, I just started yesterday and am thrilled with Doug's book and this lifestyle.  I've been heavy all my life and have lost and gained 100 pounds twice.  I had my stomach stapled in 1997 and lost about 60 pounds and have since lost another 30.  I still need to lose about 75 lbs - and I would be at the lowest weight of my life!

I have to have my knees replaced because of arthritis and lack of cartilage - I'm only 53.  I had done Atkins many years ago and had some success.  Sweets are my downfall and since my stomach stapling they go down easy (ice cream cookies, pies, etc.  - you get the idea).

I am extremely hopeful.

Just wanted to say hi
