Hi Doug - it's a worthwhile cause.  Better to step in early rather than when the problem is overwelming. Money's short all round, but every bit helps. I'm in.

Thanks all.  Transferred containers to fridge.  Australian standards are supposedly strict regarding Nutritional Information - they are supposed to be on every food item that is sold (barring fresh fruit and vegetables).  Nutritional Info is also made available at all major fast food outlets.  Though I suppose with all things, some companies probably 'fudge' their information to make it more appealing.  Items that have a red tick on them are supposedly heart foundation approved BUT companies have to buy the tick which really does make is seem suspicious.  Many people think that the 'tick' should be independantly awarded, not approved by submission and payment.

Hi hollly - everyone here is just great and really helpful.

Umpa - what a cutie (little devil grandson).  Hmmm - does it reflect his personality? :D

I'm annoyed at myself for not reading the label.  I was in a hurry and presumed the carb count would be the same!
I have been buying my fts food supplies online and I had bought Bob's Red Mill Golden Flaxseed Meal which ends up being 0 carbs.  Whilst shopping I came across another brand (Melrose organic)which was reasonably priced and I didn't have to pay shipping.  A quick glance and thought, yeah ok and bought it.  When I was putting it in the pantry I read the label a bit more thoroughly. It has 0.8c/10g which equates to 8.0c/100g.  Total dietry fibre 3.3g which I am presuming has already been deducted.  If using 25g (1/4 cup) say for the OMM - this adds 2.4 carbs to the recipe.  Not Fair!!!!! The only ingredients is Flaxseeds so how are the carb counts so different?

PS - is it really necessary to store in the fridge after opening?

Memorial Day is a US national holiday to remember men and women who died in defense of our country.  Many people expand the meaning to everyone who has died.  My husband's family is from a rural area and they have a tradition of decorating the graves of their relatives with flowers and wreaths.

Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday of May.

Good question, Morgan.

Thanks Andrea - we have Anzac Day which is the 25 April to honour our dead (and those still living) soldiers.  We have a public holiday and services around the nation.

General Discussion / Re: Week 3 - Scales are my friend
« on: May 16, 2012, 06:52:18 PM »
Thanks all.  I use my kitchen scales a lot too.  The real reason I am weighing in weekly and putting it on the forum is for accountability.  There is no one here that I wish to weigh in front of.  Since I have a fair bit to lose, I feel I should have it 'memorialised' somewhere to keep me on track, rather than slink away and eat a DONUT!!!!!!! if things go a bit 'wonky'.  Good outcome or bad.  Good in that I show a loss or bad that I should (stop and think what's gone wrong) and try harder and that there is support if I need it.

General Discussion / Week 3 - Scales are my friend
« on: May 15, 2012, 07:53:41 PM »
Well Week 3 has rolled along. I couldn't weigh in on my normal day as I was stranded far from home - resisting temptation .  Now I know why doug insists we empty our homes from the high carb stuff.  When I am home I feel "safe". I know almost everything at home is edible without any consequence.  In someone elses home it's like a minefield.  But the scales are my friend this week as they registered a-

Drumroll please - 5lb loss (consigned to the universe to find a new home) - making a total of 8lbs in 3 weeks.

Thank you to all for just being there.  Thanks doug and umpa for my free book (Bakery) -it will have a good home with me :D

Well you know what they say "to good to be true", I have a new appreciation for zucchini though.  At least it is honest and upfront about its carb content.

General Discussion / Protected Carbs?

Dreamfields makes low carb pasta - stating that for a 56gram dry serving is equal to 5 carbs:
Total carbs        41 g
Fiber                - 5 g
Protected carbs -31 g  which leaves a total of 5 carbs.  What exactly are Protected Carbs?
(I think I read that these were undigestible, but can't remember if this is correct.)

General Discussion / Children and Donuts
« on: May 15, 2012, 07:24:54 AM »
I was stranded away from home for a couple of days and eating breakfast out seemed like a good idea.  I went to the local food hall in the shopping mall and had a souvlaki salad (lamb chicken lettuce  cucumber tomato), not something I would have normally have for breakfast but really did not want bacon and eggs that had been sitting for a while.  Beside the point.  Whilst eating I people watched and was amazed and somewhat horrified at the amount of small children (under 5) that were sitting eating iced donuts (from donut king) and having bubbacinos ( cappacinos for children).  Mothers encouraging these children to finish it all up.  All one little boy wanted to do was run around and play but he was called back to finish.  I'm hoping that this was all a treat for them and not a daily event because it seems like early training for bad habits.  The next day I was in a different mall waiting for a friend and watched lots of children walking with parents with cups full of cinnamon-sugared 'donut holes' (little balls).  I've never really paid much attention but since doing FTS a lot of these things are really standing out to me and I think I am getting concerned about all the sugar laden stuff out there affecting all these young people.
